Well as a midwife in San Diego I know first hand that midwives are starting to use more technology.Although natural way of delivering a baby should be the main goal of midwifery.  You still can use some modern technologies.One example that midwives use is an ultrasound.The reason for this is so that a midwife can also determine the gender of the baby.

Another advancement that is being done in my midwives San Diego service is that we do have emergency equipment at birth.  Things like equipment to resuscitate.  Other various forms of emergency equipment.These things for emergency purposes negate the argument of other people that midwifery is not safe.

Another advance being done with my San Diego waterbirth service is the waterbirth kits being used.  Waterbirths are when you have the baby in water. Well the kits allow for ease of delivery.It will also make it safer for the mother and the baby during the delivery itself.

As you can see midwifery is more advanced now and safer than what people think of it. The thoughts of doing procedures as if in the stone age is not reality.  This all leads to the fact that having a baby at home and with a midwife is safer then you think.  All of these advanced tools make having a baby at home as safe as having a baby in the hospital.So if you plan on undergoing a homebirth do not think that it is not safe.

What is really the use of midwifery?It is defined as the practice of assisting women to give birth naturally. Of course there are bigger definitions. But this is the simplest definition.  As a San Diego licensed midwife that is the job which is to help a woman attempt to deliver naturally.  There are a lot of benefits to this.  Mainly of course no drug use. And the delivery proceeds faster because there are no drugs administered.Because most drugs administered during the delivery actually slows down the delivery. 

Women now not just choose to give birth naturally but also opt to give birth at their own homes.They are choosing their homes over hospitals to give birth to their babies.This is a lot more different than what people are used to doing.  But it offers a lot of benefits.  As a midwives San Diego I have been able to see these benefits firsthand.  Some of those benefits is a more private environment for the mom.Intrusive medical procedures are less needed also because the way of giving birth is the natural way.

So what we are going to do is look at the water birth process and it's benefits. These are going to come from experience that I have gained as a midwife in San Diego.First of all, water birth is the way of delivering a baby while the patient isin a tub filled with warm water.Usually, it is done in a tub full of warm water.It is said to be good for the baby because the baby also lived in a similar environment for almost 9 months.The babies have been in water inside the mother's womb for 9 months and using this method helps the babies get adjusted.

It is also shown in studies that it helps in pain management.To hear that is a big relief for women. A lot of times it allows the use of no medicine.  I have performed many without medicine as well as many other homebirth midwife San Diego I have spoken with.

Is water birth method safe for babies and the mother?It is safe for the babies and mothers most of the time as we can learn from the studies on this process.Due to certain medical conditions,in some cases, it isn't advisable to use. I have had that happen in my waterbirth San Diego service. Going to a specialist first is the best way.

Another benefit of having a water birth is it reduces the risk of skin tears.  This can be a painful occurence during delivery.  But having a baby in water helps lessen that possibility.  Because it soothes the skin.

Well because there is that pain involved, two schools of thought have come about on how to deal with labor and delivery.  I am going to offer some perspective on one particular school of thought that I have gained first hand experience with by being a homebirth midwife San Diego.

There is the medical model for delivery which is associated with drugs to kill the pain, and sometimes cesarean to complete the delivery.

There is one other model, though not as common or accepted, but for those that practice it and believe in it, consider it a safer alternative for the woman.

That model is called the midwifery model.  That model is in stark contrast with the medical model.The medical model is where you rely heavily on medicine, while the midwifery model relies on the natural.Midwifery philosphy believes that pregnancy, labor, and delivery should happen as naturally as possible because it is a natural process.

This model is performed by a group called midwives. Midwives San Diego are generally woman, who attend the birth, often times at the mother's home.This midwife would help with some techniques that help the woman go through labor as naturally as possible without drugs.

Contrary to popular belief, the non-use of medicine actually allows the labor to happen much faster because most pain killers actually slows the labor down.

The midwife is a profession that has a regulatory board that oversees, certifies, and licenses the individual. 

Although often not a doctor or nurse, some midwives can be nurses.

Even though they are not a doctor or nurse, they do carry with them some medical equipment, such as resuscitation devices and suturing equipment.

So this describes what a midwife is and what midwifery is about in relation to pregnancy and delivery.

Their objective is to let the labor and delivery to occur as naturally as possible.  This reduces the likelihood of a c-section.Does not subject you to hospital procedures that are invasive such as episiotomys.Less medical intrusion will be used such as drugs to speed up or slow the pregnancy or the breaking of the water.  And the best part of all that a woman will love, generally labor happens much quicker naturally.
