The Importance of Checking UK Insurance Prices

There are many different types of insurance policies available to purchase in the UK which are broadly covered under categories such as motor, building and contents. Whichever type of insurance package is required by a customer, however, it is always important to check insurance prices and ensure that a little shopping around is done beforehand. In fact, it is quite common in the UK for insurance customers to base their policy decisions on a few points that actually make very little sense. Indeed, UK customers in search of a new insurance policy will often select an indemnity package from one of several major insurance companies, as these are often seen as providing the most security and greatest value for money. Furthermore, existing UK policyholders will very often choose to renew their policies automatically with their original insurers, as this is seen as the most convenient option in many cases.

However, in respect to the first point, it is clear that selecting a policy from only the major insurance companies is not entirely sensible. Indeed, with regard to cost efficiency, the largest insurance providers can very often afford to charge the highest premiums as they know that they will attract a certain type of customer, whose priorities are often based on convenience rather than affordability. Nevertheless, by opting for policies that are provided directly by the major insurers, many consumers are losing out on potentially substantial savings without receiving any practical benefit. Of course, the point to remember in this instance is that almost all of the major insurance companies are actually subsidiaries of even larger insurance conglomerates.

Moreover, those insurance companies will themselves usually comprise several other subsidiaries that are designed to provide alternative packages and prices to consumers. In fact, most of the major motor insurers will also feature so-called direct companies, or those which carry entirely different names, that are aimed at driving down costs and, in the process, securing greater numbers of customers who will eventually be herded back towards the premium policies. Accordingly, it is beneficial for insurance customers to take note that their choice of any policy that is provided by a major insurance company is quite likely to be available at a significantly reduced cost from a direct or alternatively named subsidiary. Equally, many other insurers are specifically driven towards providing short term (typically 1-3 years) low price policies, so choosing a package from one of these will usually offer more benefits than disadvantages.

In respect to those customers who simply renew their existing policies, it is clear that this is the most convenient option for many people. However, insurance policies will almost always increase each year, despite no-claims bonuses, if selected from the same company. Indeed, as pointed out above, insurers usually start premiums low before gradually increasing the amount over time. Hence, before a policy is due for renewal, it is always worth shopping around for cheaper prices.

On this note, there are many ways in which alternative insurance check policies can be checked and, in most cases, online comparison sites are typically the most convenient. It is also worth stressing, however, that not all comparison sites feature the cheapest prices, so it is beneficial to experiment with different search engines whilst shopping for the lowest insurance premiums. Furthermore, although not a common practice in the UK, it is possible to negotiate a new premium with an insurance company even after a quote or renewal has been provided – sometimes a little haggling pays off.
