Popular perceptions about health insurance are often wrong. Below are a few of the more misunderstood concerns that individuals have with regards to obtaining medical care coverage.

This can be a follow-up to Health Insurance Myths - Part I.

Myth#6: Most individuals will get health insurance when they really want it and may afford the premiums.

Fact: This may be true if you are healthy or when you have access to employer-sponsored medical health insurance. But if you are looking for private individual medical insurance, this may be another story. The insurance companies generally in most states can decline applicants should they have certain medical conditions (pre existing conditions) provided that the underwriting standards are equally sent applications for like individuals. As an example, if you have diabetes or have recently stood a heart attack or cancer, you most likely will not qualify for an individual health insurance policy even if you can afford the premiums. You may also be called "uninsurable" by some companies.

Myth#7: I can get individual medical health insurance even if I'm overweight.

Fact: Not always true. Insurance firms use weight and height underwriting guidelines. If you're obese and trying to get medical insurance on your own, there's a good chance you will end up turned down. This really is due to the health threats associated with your weight. Even if you are not refused, you will probably pay more for coverage, sometimes up to twice the premiums of a person who is at the weight guidelines.

Myth#8: All insurance companies have comparable coverage and premiums and so i really don't need to shop around for medical insurance.

Fact: Not the case. It is important for you to shop around with assorted insurance companies to see if you are obtaining the coverage you will need at an affordable price. Today, medical health insurance plans are so diverse it's difficult to decide who to make use of. There are specific company qualities that you should pay close attention to before picking just any health insurance plan. Having the answers to these questions will be valuable. Get questions answered concerning the history of the organization, the monthly premiums, any deductibles to pay for, what are the co-pays and co-insurance and what services are covered.

Myth#9: Individual and group medical health insurance is the same.

Fact: Incorrect. There are many differences between individual and group medical health insurance. With private individual insurance you work directly having an insurance company and must meet certain underwriting requirements. Coverage can be for the individual or can also include family. The insurance company can decline coverage based on both current and past health issues of anybody to be covered around the policy. Once insured, they could not cancel your policy due to changes in your wellbeing or for claims you submit if you pay your premiums promptly. There may be exceptions therefore it is best to always browse the fine print. Any future rate rise in premiums will affect all policyholders with the same kind of policy. You have the policy so it is not linked with your place of employment. Changing jobs won't present an issue.

With group medical health insurance, the policy may cover tons of individuals. The terms are negotiated using the insurance company from your employer or organization. Usually the individual has little, if any, decision in the benefits or coverage. One main advantage, that is guaranteed issue medical health insurance. You are not declined due to preexisting conditions. Coverage can be for the individual or it can also include family members. If employer-sponsored, the policy will usually end if employment ends.
